Course Descriptions

The American Heart Association (AHA) strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the AHA, and any fees charged for such a course do not represent income to the Association.

SSHS is recognized as a Community Training Center by the American Heart Association; all instructors have obtained instructor status according to the American Heart Association Guidelines.


Advanced Cardiac Life Support - ACLS

The ACLS Provider course is a two day course designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed to manage the first ten minutes of an adult cardiac arrest. Ten core ACLS cases are presented and participates work in an interactive learning environment. This course is intended for professionals who may have a need to respond to a cardiovascular emergency.

Cost: $150.00 - 2 day ; $125.00 - 1 day

Automated External Defibrillator - AED

The Heartsaver AED course teaches the basic techniques of adult CPR and use of an automated external defibrillator. Students also learn about using barrier devices in CPR and giving first aid for choking. The course teaches how to recognize the signs of four major emergencies: heart attack, stroke, cardiac arrest, and foreign-body airway obstruction.

Babysitter Safety

A well-prepared babysitter will be highly respected and greatly appreciated by parents. This safety course combines the American Heart Association infant and child CPR course with information on prevention of injury, infant bottle-feeding, diapering and manageable playtime activities. Babysitters will also learn valuable information on babysitting as a business.

Basic Life Support - Healthcare Providers

The BLS Healthcare Provider Course is designed to teach the skills of CPR for victims of all ages (including ventilation with a barrier device and a bag-mask device); use of an automated external defibrillator (AED); and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO). It is intended for participants who provide health care to patients in a wide variety of settings, including in-hospital and out-of-hospital. For certified or noncertified, licensed or nonlicensed healthcare professionals.

Cost: Full Course -$57.00; Renewal -$52.00

Course Length: 6-8 hours

Healthcare Provider Skill Check

If you have completed the online portion of the American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Course (check AHA website for online course fee), call 850.222.0020 to schedule your appointment for skill validation to receive your Healthcare Provider completion card. Your official American Heart Association online completion certificate must be presented at the time of your skill check.

Basic Life Support - Instructors

This course is designed to teach skills of providing basic life saving skills to others. After attending this instructor course you will not only understand the role of the BLS instructor in strengthening the chain of survival in the community, but will also gain the knowledge you need to offer BLS courses to others.

Family and Friends CPR

The CPR for Family and Friends course is a non-credentialed modular course that teaches rescuers skills in CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction. It presents information about the AHA adult chain of survival and signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke and choking in adults. The course also presents information on the AHA pediatric infant and child Chain of Survival, signs of choking in infants and children, prevention of sudden infant death syndrome, and prevention of the most common fatal injuries in infants and children.

*This course is not designed for persons who are required to attend CPR training and obtain a completion card.

Course Length: All ages: 4 hours; Adult: 2 hours; Infant and child: 3 hours

Heartsaver CPR

The Heartsaver CPR Course is a modular course that teaches lay rescuers how to recognize and treat life-threatening emergencies, including cardiac arrest and choking for adult, child, and infant victims. Students also learn to recognize the warning signs of heart attack and stroke in adults and breathing difficulties in children. The program is divided into a choice of 3 different courses.

Heartsaver CPR for All Ages: teaches CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction in the adult, infant, and child.

Heartsaver CPR for Adults: teaches CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for the adult.

Heartsaver CPR for Infants and Children: teaches CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction for infants (birth to 1 year of age) and children (1 year to 8 years of age).

Course Length: All ages: 4 hours; Adult only: 2-3 hours; Infant/Child only: 2.5 - 3 hours

Heartsaver CPR in Schools

The Heartsaver CPR in Schools course is designed to teach both adult and pediatric lay rescuer CPR to middle or high school students. The course presents information about the AHA adult and infant/child Chain of Survival, and signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, and choking in adults. The course also covers signs of choking in infants and children, prevention of sudden infant death syndrome, and prevention of the most common fatal injuries in infants and children.

The American Heart Association First Aid course is designed to provide the lay rescuer with the skills and knowledge to manage the first 10 minutes of an emergency.  Topics such as choking, seizures, diabetes, injuries and bleeding will be covered. The course also includes adult, child and infant CPR, as well as training in the use of AED.

The PALS Provider course is a two day course designed to provide the knowledge and skills needed to manage the first ten minutes of an pediatric cardiac arrest. This course is intended for professionals who may have a need to respond to a pediatric cardiovascular or respiratory emergency.
